Executive Team
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee (EC) is composed of the three ICDC team co-leaders. The EC oversees implementation and administration of the research program, allocation and distribution of funds and maintains overall accountability, authority and decision-making responsibility for the ICDC program.
Brenda Hemmelgarn, MD, PhD, FRCPC
Team Leader

Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn is a Clinician Scientist with expertise in epidemiology, health services research using administrative data, and the assessment of non-medical barriers to health care in vulnerable populations.
Dr. Hemmelgarn is the Director of the Alberta Kidney Disease Network (AKDN) and serves on several national committees, including Chair of the Central Review Committee for the Canadian Hypertension Education Program (CHEP), a key leadership position for development of annual CHEP hypertension guidelines, and is Co-Chair of the CKD Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) workgroup for the Canadian Society of Nephrology (CSN).
In addition to her successful research program, Dr. Hemmelgarn supervises several graduate students and is the Director of a graduate course in Health Services Research, Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary.
Braden Manns, MD, MSc, FRCPC
Team Leader

Dr. Braden Manns has expertise in Applied Health Economics, with a track record of producing research that impacts canadian health policy.
He has significant experience in pharmaceutical priority setting, having served on provincial (2002 - 2006) and national (2003 - 2008) committees for drug evaluation, including a term as Chair of Canadian Expert Drug Advisory Committee (CEDAC) from 2006-2008. CEDAC’s primary role is to make recommendations to canadian publicly funded drug plans regarding the funding of new pharmaceuticals, based on clinical and cost-effectiveness criteria. As Chair, Dr. Manns oversaw this $5 million dollar per year national program and led monthly full-day meetings in Ottawa.
As of November 2008, Dr. Manns has stepped down from these duties and will refocus his energy solely on policy-relevant research. He continues to chair the CSN Scientific Committee and maintains strong links with researchers across Canada. In addition to these roles and skills, Dr. Manns teaches a graduate course in economic evaluation and supervises several graduate students at all levels.
Marcello Tonelli, MD, SM, FRCPC
Team Leader

Dr. Tonelli is an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Population Health Scholar and Canada Research Chair who spends 75% of his time conducting clinical and epidemiological research. His research is aimed at improving the care of people with chronic kidney disease and its major causes (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and atherosclerosis). Specific areas of focus within these clinical populations include: identification and management of novel risk factors; designing new strategies to improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery; and determinants of access to high quality care. A unique aspect of Dr. Tonelli’s research program includes partnering with regional, provincial, and national decision-makers to ensure that the findings will be used to produce rational health policy. Dr. Tonelli supervises post-graduate medical trainees, MSc students, PhD students and post-doctoral fellows in clinical research.
Dr. Tonelli is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology and Immunology, at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada). He is a member of the Canadian Society of Nephrology Scientific Committee for the Kidney Foundation of Canada, and the President of the Canadian Society of Nephrology. He is also the Chair of the Canadian Task Force for Preventive Health Care, a panel of experts that makes recommendations on clinical preventive services for Canada’s 36,000 family physicians. Internationally, Dr. Tonelli is a member of the council of the International Society of Nephrology and a member of the Board of Directors for Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO). Dr. Tonelli is an Associate Editor for American Journal of Kidney Disease, the Cochrane Renal Group, and the Journal of Nephrology, and is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN).
